Europe Braces for Severe Flooding as Rivers Reach Critical Levels

Urgent Warnings Issued in Czechia and Romania

Central Europe is on high alert as major rivers reach critical levels, threatening severe flooding in several countries. In Czechia, the Vltava River in Prague has overflowed its banks, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of residents. The Elbe River is also rising rapidly, putting the historic town of Melnik at risk.

In Romania, the Danube River has reached its highest level in decades, prompting authorities to issue emergency warnings. The city of Tulcea is particularly vulnerable, as the river threatens to breach its protective embankments.

Heavy Rain and Snowmelt Cause Concerns

The flooding is being caused by a combination of heavy rainfall and melting snow in the region's mountains. The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute has issued a red alert, the highest possible warning level, for several areas along the Vltava River. The Romanian Water Management Authority has also warned of "significant flooding" along the Danube and its tributaries.

Experts say the flooding could be similar in magnitude to the devastating floods that hit Central Europe in 2002, which caused widespread damage and loss of life. Emergency services are on high alert and are preparing for evacuations and other measures to protect residents.

The flooding is expected to continue in the coming days, as more rain and snowmelt is forecast. Residents in affected areas are urged to follow official instructions and stay informed about the latest updates.
