During the Revolutionary War, the National Guard played a major role in the defense of the newly formed United States. In the 20th century, the National Guard served in both World War I and World War II, as well as in Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq.
Today, the National Guard remains an important part of the US military. The National Guard is composed of approximately 340,000 soldiers and airmen who are ready to serve their communities and their country at a moment's notice.
