Mannheim Market Square Attack: Interior Minister Suspects Islamist Motive

Attack Occurs Just Before Noon on Friday

Police Investigating Knife Attack in Downtown Mannheim

On Friday, May 31, 2024, the attack on Mannheim market square occurred just before noon. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser stated that there is a possibility that the attack was motivated by Islamist extremism.

The attack took place shortly after 11:30 AM GMT on the Marktplatz, a downtown square in the southwestern city of Mannheim. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a man wielding a knife, targeting individuals in the square.

Police responded to the scene and cordoned off the area. Forensic officers were present, examining the scene and collecting evidence. A smashed stall belonging to Pax Europa, a far-right organization known for its anti-Islamic rhetoric, was visible in the aftermath of the attack, bearing a banner that read "Stop Political Islam."

The police are investigating the incident and have not yet released any official statements regarding the motive or the identity of the suspect. However, Interior Minister Faeser's comments suggest that the attack may have been driven by Islamist extremism.
